Life
Early Life
Sampson's father was left to look after the girl and her sister, Hailey, when Sampson's mother passed away in the year of the 53rd Hunger Games, when Sampson was 10. They were severely struck by the typical poverty of a Lower District, and it took all their combined efforts to survive. Sampson cared for Hailey with particular love and attention and this compelled her to get a job chopping wood when she was only fifteen. Two years after, Sampson was offered a higher payed job in the dangerous lumber mills, but she accepted - knowing it would mean more money for her family. However, in that same year, Hailey also started work in the mill, and Sampson knew this was too dangerous for the nine year old. Sampson began to resent her father, who supported the idea of Hailey working wholeheartedly, and this resentment was proved just when Hailey was involved with an inevitable accident at the mill. First catching her arm in a blade, and then dying from blood loss and insufficient medical care, Hailey's death tore Sampson apart. The negativity towards her father turned to hate, and Sampson felt no remorse towards him when he moved out of their house to take care of his dying mother. Sampson stopped her job at the mill, starting her own carpentering business instead. She supported herself without her father, much more relaxed than she had ever been in his company, and than she had been since Hailey's death.
63rd Hunger Games
The Reaping
Sampson was Reaped alongside Owen Rook in District Seven's 63rd Reaping. Sampson made her way robotically to the stage, ignoring the eyes staring at her. She didn't acknowledge Owen coming up onto the stage and kept looking down, expecting her father to call out but not hearing anything.
Training Centre
Upon arriving in the Capitol, Sampson was noticed by District Nine's Ivy Soren, who approached her while she was carving at the firemaking station. Sampson accepted Ivy's invitation to form a two-person alliance. PTS info here. Sampson's private training session amazed the Gamemakers enough to award her with a 10 out of 12, placing her far above the average score of 6.9, and making her a clear threat to the other tributes. In her interview, Sampson was modest about this, simply implying that she had done something that "they must have seen worth such a high score." After the interview, Sampson and Owen talked as they sleeplessly anticipated the Bloodbath in the Dining Room. Neither gave away much about themselves or their strategies, but Sampson mused that she was relieved that they got a chance to talk before one or both of them was dead.
