Early Life

Meela's parents were the 'inevitable' couple - childhood sweethearts who grew up together, and who everyone expected to stay together. They had Meela in the year of the 45th Hunger Games and, despite living in the poorest District, lived comfortably and happily. That all changed when Meela's younger sister Sierra was born too fragile, all her bones broken. Money was devoted to healing and caring and Meela's mother had to work as well as her father, leaving the girl with less attention than she wanted. Meela loved her little sister, but also hated her for stopping her from doing lots of the things she wanted to do. The two would often read stories together but, as much as she wished to, Meela could never go on adventures in real life, scolded for doing things without bringing Sierra along. Perhaps, in the back of her mind, she sometimes wished that something would happen to her, just so she could be the centre of attention, able to exercise her curiosity and trust without being criticised for it. Just once.

63rd Hunger Games

The Reaping

The District 12 Reaping took place as it usually did, with no interruptions and no volunteers willing to save Meela or Asunder Hayes from their fate. Both accepted their positions quietly and without fuss, Meela clutching the feather that Sierra had given her that morning, and then headed off for the Capitol.
