Aisha Aquino

Aisha "Jailbird" Aquino was the female tribute from District One in the 2nd Hunger Games. She was known for her command of the Spanish language and struggling to speak English in the arena.

History

Aisha Aquino was born in 10 BDD in District One. She was raised by her father and grandparents along with an older brother Alvaro. It is not known what happened to her mother, as she is never mentioned by Aisha.

As a child, Aisha spoke Spanish in her home and struggled to learn English at school. She grew up hearing stories about her Latinx ancestors who fought for their rights to speak Spanish, protested against border separation, and marched against discrimination such as the pay gap. By the time she was nine she had learned to fire a gun, taught by her father who was wary of the turbulence in Panem. When the war broke out, Aisha quickly joined the ranks of the rebellion with the rest of her family and coined the nickname 'Jailbird' for her record number of times she broke in and out of District One's prison.

Stuck in prison when the war finally ended, Aisha and her other prisonmates were forced to watch the Hunger Games almost every day. At seventeen she was dragged out of her cell and released into the streets of One famished and shell-shocked. A kind elderly woman tended to her for a night before she was taken to the Reaping and ultimately reaped in what looked to be a rigged reaping. Dragged from the crowd kicking and screaming, she was taken to the Capitol and forced to live on one, sometimes no, meals per day. By the time she was released into the arena she was famished and suffered from dangerously low blood sugar, exhaustion and weak muscles as a result.

2nd Hunger Games

The Bloodbath

Panicked and famished, Aisha was quick to grab a weapon. The first attack of the Second Games was her slice at Jett Davies, then moving to attack Samiyuq Hernández. Upon realising Sam could speak Spanish, she quickly joined forced with hir and Antigone Boyé promising to watch each-other's backs as they lept into battle. Attempting to overpower Persephone Vega with Antigone, Aisha found herself the victim of a surprise attack from Ajax Caine - but Ajax was quickly attacked by Cattullus Brown to buy her some time. As Cattullus fled, Aisha took it upon herself to finish off Ajax by slicing off his foot.

Exhausted and suffering from the effects of malnourishment and heat stroke, Aisha stumbled into the battlefield to try and find Sam. Mistaking Axel Moreau for Sam, she launched herself at Jett Davies - severing his ear.

Death

Overpowered and exhausted, Jett sliced off Aisha's leg at the hip. She quickly bled out on the arena floor, begging her guardian angels not to let her die.

• In the 'in-between', a fictional afterlife for Zoe's tributes, Aisha was revealed to be the spark.
