Early Life
Jim grew up primarily in a single-parent household. His mom left when he was young, so only his dad was left to raise him. The elder Deer was not particularly kind or cruel; the biggest action Jim thanked him for was setting him up in the mines. The work was something Jim welcomed, as he had never been particularly bright, and he was glad to be out of school. Jim spent his days working, thinking that was his way of contributing to the district. That was his greatest desire – to be seen as cool and, more importantly, useful.
68th Hunger Games
Jim wasn’t paying attention on the day of the Reaping. He figured his name wouldn’t be called, and it wasn’t. When he saw the look of terror on the face of the boy whose was, however, he decided to volunteer. He figured, at the very least, it would give him the opportunity to see some more of Panem. On the train, he was so overcome with the desire to eat the food that he almost made himself puke. He also spent a little bit of time talking to Emery Willton, his District partner. Ultimately, however, he didn’t ally himself with her, but rather with Blaire Sycamore of District 5 & Jay Krearns of District 4. He thought Jay was the type of “cool” that Jim himself wanted to be. The trio called their alliance “The Lost Boys.” During his training session, Jim spent a lot of time unsure of what to do. However, right as he was about to leave and accept the lowest possible score, Jim decided to put his mining skills to use. He couldn’t find a pick, so instead he used an axe to chop several dummies to bits. For a finale, he piled them together and burned the lot, earning him a training score of 6.
Day 1
Jay entered the Bloodbath feeling relatively comfortable with himself. His private training session had proved to him that he might have a shot at winning. Once the pedestals rose up, Jim was ecstatic to see that he was underground, practically home turf for him. He figured that being a miner would give him at least a slight advantage. The more he thought about, the more eager he grew for it all to start. By the time the timer counted down to 0, Jim had a huge grin on his face. He spent the bloodbath itself thinking about coal, while managing to do a little bit of damage. July Cartwright was his only target. However, Jim suffered plenty of damage as well. The most notable attackers were Galaxy Rose-Clements, who broke his arm, and Patricia Valfierno, who stabbed him in the stomach. By the end of it, Jim barely made it out with his life. He regrouped with his alliance and was designated the leader because of his mining experience. However, it did not serve him well enough, and the group soon found itself travelling in circles. Realizing this, they decided to stop and rest, a necessary action given the copious amount of blood Jim was losing. He had fashioned a sling out of his shirt, but that had allowed his stomach wound to bleed freely. Ultimately, he had to rely on his allies to get him healed for the next day.
Day 2
The group stayed at the cornucopia overnight and ran into Cha Leviane, Fionnbharr Stoddard, and Stella Calloway. Jim started off strong with a hit to Fionnbharr’s femur, breaking the boy’s bone. However, when Cha’s torch went out soon after, both teams were plunged into darkness, and Jim lost the ability to differentiate friend from foe. He lashed out blindly and managed to hit Jay, who threatened to decapitate Jim if he messed up again. His next hit reached Cha instead. In the process, however, Jim suffered much of his own damage, including deep cuts to his leg and thigh. He was close to perishing when he lashed out a final time, and unfortunately ended up shattering Jay’s leg. This blow proved to be the final one, as the other team quickly retreated upon realizing one of the fighters would soon be a face in the sky. On his way to Jay, Jim picked up the dying boy’s belongings, including his bone sword. Jay knew he was dying, and he blamed Jim for it. He was angry, understandably. He went on an entire tirade attacking Jim, calling him a traitor and warning Blaire not to trust him. He let loose a stream of insults meant to throw Jim off his game, but Jim remained unfazed. Although he had originally thought of Jay as cool, now he was indifferent to the boy. He was nothing but one of many tributes who would never leave the arena. So when Jay moved to attack him, it was easy for Jim to merely raise the bone sword and allow Jay to skewer himself on his own weapon, finally killing him. All he said was, “Don’t touch me,” and kicked the dead boy away. Jim felt no sadness upon seeing his former ally dead at his hand. Interestingly enough, he felt proud of himself and his ability to kill a Career tribute as strong as Jay had been.
Day 3
Blaire and Jim ran into Valerie Leotos, Tauankia Ojai (Notchimine), and Galaxy Rose-Clements. Jim started off right away by slashing away at Valerie’s calf, landing a deep gash. However, this prompted some backlash, and soon the other team had their entire sights on him. He managed to get in one more hit before the lights went out, sending them all back into darkness. Reminded of the day before, Jim was angry, though soon the lights were back on. Unfortunately, that was because Galaxy had lit him on fire. At this point, Jim felt his strength fading, and he knew he would soon be dead. With the last of his strength, he lashed out with his sword, stabbing Valerie through the heart. He was satisfied for just a moment, but then Galaxy got her revenge by setting Jim on fire again with a burning hit to his foot. The pain and blood loss from all of his injuries finally overtook Jim, and he, like many before him, died in the arena.
