Life

Early Life

The Grant Family was seen by the rest of the District, frankly, as constantly falling apart. Curtis was the oldest of five children, each - with the exception of one set of twins - born to a different father. Carmen Grant, Curtis' mother, met and fell for many different men, and so Curtis' clan were more like a patchwork novelty than a carefully constructed family unit. In age order, the siblings went Curtis, born in the year of the 44th Hunger Games when Carmen was only seventeen, Colin and Cynthia, twins two years his junior, Cecil, two years younger again, and Cassidy the youngest, who was 13 when Curtis was Reaped. Curtis himself was always a popular boy at school, having been driven to make friends by the urge to get away from his mother, who had confessed to having so many children because they were useful for bringing in more tesserae to sustain the family. He resented his siblings, who he had to look after like a father would due to the lack thereof, and preferred to spend as much of his time as possible with other kids his age, far away from his family.

62nd Hunger Games

The Reaping

Curtis was Reaped along with Alaska Putley in District Seven's 62nd Reaping. He accepted his position with a sort of cocky relief. After a tense morning with his siblings, being up on the stage was liberating for Curtis, even when his mother forced her way to the stage and told him not to win for himself, but to come home and make her rich.

Training Centre

Curtis' experience in the Capitol started in the Training Centre, where he started introducing himself to people almost immediately. At the medical station, Curtis formed a bond with Ellea Banks, and the two agreed to help each other in the arena. The alliance expanded when he met Bran and Aria Wolfe, and arranged to stay with them in the arena as an alliance. This assurance of help in the Bloodbath made Curtis confident in his Private Training Session at the end of the week. He presented himself to the Gamemakers, displaying a competence for navigating dangerous land, close combat and firemaking, before continuing to show off his survival skills by pointing out poisonous plants, and bandaging and sterilising a dummy's wound. For this impressive, if not arrogant, performance, Curtis received a solid 8 out of 12. In his interview, Curtis pointed out that this was the same score received by Kraken slayer Jana Hale one year before, and told Caesar that he was confident with it.

Bloodbath

Curtis and his alliance were the first tributes to run towards the Cornucopia after the gong, followed closely by rival four-person alliance Stars of Orion. Whilst the White Walkers turned on Demeter Merwin-Glory, her alliance targeted Curtis himself. The attacks were devastating, as Curtis lost first an ear and then his right arm, severed by Demeter herself. Bleeding heavily, Curtis fled the Bloodbath soon after the Stars did, clutching his severed arm to his chest.

Day 1

From the Cornucopia, Curtis made his way to the River Styx and there found his District partner Alaska Putley. He attacked her without realising who she was, causing her to flee. Curtis met up again with Ellea and Bran, however there was no sign of Aria. As a result, the trio initiated Alaska into the White Walkers, knowing that in the early days of the Arena, there was safety in numbers.

Day 2

The Walkers spent the night in the Asphodel Meadows, where they joined in a clash with two Harpy muttations. However, instead of focusing on the creatures attacking them, Curtis and his alliance turned on Ellea, although at first Curtis blamed his glancing blow on her surprising him so soon after he had woken up. Curtis and Bran both stabbed her deeply in the back and leg, but Curtis managed to finish her off with a cut to her left thigh. He picked Bran and the two boys and Alaska took off running from the Harpies with Ellea's items.

Day 3

Curtis, Bran and Alaska traveled by night to the Statue Garden, feeling lucky that they had avoided other alliances thus far. There, they were met by two Spitting Raptor muttations. The human alliance hacked and slashed their way through one Raptor, but not before it had bitten deep into Curtis' leg, poisoning him. Bran got trapped in the arms of a statue portraying Heron Kimberling, but Curtis and Alaska managed to chop the statue down and free him. After another difficult fight, the White Walkers stopped to recover and prepared to flee the Statue Garden. Curtis was weak from the poison and the wound it entered through, and knew that his time to die would come soon. However, it seemed like Ripred (or at least Capitolites) were watching over him, as a quiet beeping noise signified that a silver parachute with his name on it had landed nearby. Inside the case, Curtis found a precious bottle of antivenom. He hastily cured himself, regretting that there wasn't enough for Alaska, too, and the alliance got out of there.

Day 4

All around them, tributes were fighting each other without mercy, but Curtis and Bran - now short of a fled Alaska - were unmolested by humans and muttations on Day 4. They retraced their steps back to the Asphodel Meadows and stayed there for the day, tending their wounds and having a laugh. They mused about the other tributes and their home lives, listening as the canon beat out the death notes of three newly fallen tributes. Curtis and his ally decided to stay in the Meadows that night, hoping to retain the good fortune they had on Day Four.

Day 5

Ailis, Demeter and Heather - the three remaining members of Stars of Orion who still stayed together - stumbled into the Meadows and Curtis and Bran faced them head on. The fight was at first an echo of the Bloodbath, the Stars targeting Curtis and the Walkers targeting Demeter. However, when Curtis sliced Ailis' leg off at the hip, her alliance saw how useless she would be to keep with them, and turned on her instead. Curtis and Bran barely had to do any work at all, and Ailis was soon just another corpse in the Arena. Curtis took a moment to compose himself, and then showed his compassion to the cameras by tending to Bran. The Walkers camped out in the same location for a second night.

Day 6

On the next day, the White Walkers were faced by not one but two enemies; an alliance including Bran's sister, Aria, and a monstrous Scylla muttation. One of the Scylla's four heads bit Curtis' right arm, but the blow was only shallow, and the two alliances began to work together to fend off the mutual enemy. Finally, the muttation fell, but the Argonaut alliance proceeded to turn their blows on Curtis. After several landed cuts, Curtis and Bran knew it was time to go, and both alliances departed their separate ways.

Day 7 & Death

Tragedy struck on Day 7, when all the Tributes ended up in the Tartarus Pit together, the alliances confused and abolished. Curtis ignored his need to find Bran because there was a new enemy on hand: District 6 female Naveen Casovnik, armed with a deadly cat o' nine tails. He was shocked by her self-mutilation, and was throw off guard, meaning that his first few attacks didn't land well. In contrast, Naveen attacked him fiercely, breaking his shin bone. Curtis managed to cut his opponent's forehead deeply, but that couldn't delay his fate. On Naveen's next swing, the whip split Curtis' skull in two, killing him instantly, and brutally. Curtis staggered and stuttered his last words, and then collapsed to the ground, the last light leaving his body.
