History

Joshua's father left his family shortly after he was born, and he grew up with an older brother named Roman and their mother. At ten he was apprenticed to an apothecary, which he found less interesting than he initially hoped but which eased the family's financial struggles. Unfortunately, his mother's health fell into decline with age; by the time he was sixteen he and Roman were supporting the household—nominally, at least, as Roman handled money poorly, including purchasing two dogs they couldn't afford to support. (The dogs helped with hunting, but were a strain on resources when prey was scarce, and when one became pregnant the Rowans were driven to eat the puppies.) Eventually, realizing they could no longer provide their mother the full-time care she needed, they sent her to live with their aunt, and managed to scrape by slightly more easily on their own.

56th Hunger Games

Before the Games

Allied with Trace, Ocean, and Luyu.

Early Games

Joshua fled the Bloodbath without fighting anyone, only to find the aftermath of Ocean, Will, Ember, Luyu, Mercury, and Emma's later fight, with Ocean and Emma lying dead. Distressed and suspicious, but unable to bring himself to pry or leave, he stuck with the injured Luyu and joined Hiccups. The next Day, Hiccups fought three Hyords (Echo, Bunny, and Men), which killed Mercury.

Other than the Arena-wide attack of falling shoes, the remaining Hiccups were able to rest on Day Three. The next day they ran into Anani, and a small skirmish broke out—with Luyu attacking Anani, and all three of the others retaliating against Luyu—before they were attacked by a group of Snatchers. Ember and Joshua handily killed their Snatchers, but Luyu lost an item and Anani nearly asphyxiated. Joshua helped him escape, leaving Luyu and Ember; afterward the two groups made no effort to rejoin.

Late Games

Joshua and Anani managed to rest on Days Five and Six, sharing supplies and an uneasy but genuine truce, but on Day Seven they were intercepted by Cerba and Anani was killed—on the same day, Joshua would learn that night, as former allies Ember and Luyu. When he stumbled across Takeba the next day, he attempted to use the bow from Anani to shoot her from a distance, but she closed the distance too quickly; the fight was nearly evenly matched, but Takeba ultimately won out.
