Life

Early Life

Sawyer was born in the year of the 43rd Hunger Games to two technological brainiacs. As a result of being an only child, he was severely overprotected growing up, kept under close supervision by parents who didn't pay attention to much else that he did. However, in his school years, Sawyer developed pyromaniac tendencies and made a hobby of setting fires and explosions in his school and neighbourhood. He was never caught, taking care that no one - particularly not his parents - ever found out it was him. As a teenager, Sawyer shed the reputation of being a good-for-nothing 'dweeb' that he'd acquired, and developed into a regular cool kid. He had frequent flings with girls he knew who regarded him as the boy who was bad enough to get kicked out of school at 15 (the truth is he flunked out) and the boys all respected him with an awe at his total lack of conscience and easy, sarcastic attitude.

59th Hunger Games

The Reaping

Sawyer was Reaped along with Cassandra Hearsh in District Three's 59th Reaping. At first, he didn't realise it was his name that was called, and when he did he walked up to the stage without protest and accepted his place. He received a brisk goodbye from his parents, realising that they had loved him as parents should all along, and were proud of him even though they knew about his pyromania. His father gave him a cigarette, which he kept as his token for the duration of the Games. Once on the train, Sawyer contemplated his life and talked with a rather teary escort who insisted he call her Sparky. The escort was distraught, as the tributes she was assigned to never made it home. Sawyer tried to give her some reassurance before asking to be left alone.

Training Centre

In the Training Centre, Sawyer met Sapphire Ross and Charas Harp, introducing himself to them at the Firemaking station. He suggested forming an alliance and they accepted, calling themselves Misfit Toys. Sawyer's private training session started simple - with him demonstrating his knowledge of edible plants and first aid, but the tribute soon turned up the heat. To demonstrate stealth, Sawyer created a great cloud of smoke, and then crept behind the Gamemakers' stage with a mouthful of lighter oil, surprising them as he breathed fire over their heads. For this, he received a score of 11 out of 12, and a personal escort from the Training Centre from two Peacekeepers. This made him seem a dangerous enemy for many of the other tributes. During Sawyer's interview with Caesar Flickerman, he mentioned that his Training Score proved he knew what he was doing, and went on to openly tell the audience, and his parents watching in the District, about his love for setting fires - a shock to those watching, and the interviewer. Sawyer left to prepare for the first day in the Arena with the immortal words "Piss off."

Bloodbath

Sawyer entered the Bloodbath and noticed how cold it was before anything else, disrupting his concentration and meaning that he was slightly slow off the start line. Barely seconds had passed of him running towards the Cornucopia and his allies before Sapphire was stabbed through the eye by Michael Smith, meaning he was down to only one teammate. However, Charas was proving her worth - killing tribute after tribute as the Bloodbath advanced. He came across a crowbar on the ground after attacking Dysis Admea, and proceeded to collect a bag, an empty water jug, pliers, two pairs of snowshoes, torso armour and 15 feet of bandages before fleeing the Bloodbath with Charas, having been dealt only a tiny amount of damage.

Day 1

Along with Charas, Sawyer left the Cornucopia and advanced to the Frozen River to recover. By some stroke of luck (call it a random event), Sawyer and Charas found 15 more feet of bandages and a bundle of medicinal herbs. They started a fire and exchange useful items, eating and resting before setting off to avoid any other advancing tributes.

Day 2

Misfit Toys were lucky enough to avoid all other tributes on District Two by making their way into the West part of the Frozen Jungle. Instead, they chilled (literally) by having a snowball fight. Sawyer contemplated his feelings for Charas, and whether it would be a good idea to take things further with his kindling affection for her, however he decides against it, thinking it would be too dangerous to make her anything more than an expendable ally to him.

Day 3

Because Sawwyer and his ally chose to stay in that part of the Frozen Jungle that night, it was only inevitable that the next day they would have a clash with another alliance. In this case, it was Shayde Truedhart and Damaris Benson who stumbled upon them, and a fight ensued. Both enemies targeted Charas, which left Sawyer free to attack Damaris mercilessly. Sawyer finished her off with a deep stab dealt by a knife to her calf, and he claimed her inventory before immediately turning on Shayde. After several attacks, Shayde begged the victorious alliance to be merciful, and Sawyer ordered Charas to stop attacking him. Sawyer then invited Shayde to join their alliance and Shayde accepted gratefully, bringing the Misfit Toys back up to three tributes. The alliance then left the area to get as far away from the dead body of their kill as possible.

Day 4

The terrible trio stayed safe within the Frozen Jungle for the third night of their endeavour, and woke up to find Sundra Wie in their midst. Sawyer introduced himself ironically before attacking her, but was still shivering from the extreme cold conditions of the -10°F night, and missed. After this he realised that the real enemy wasn't Sundra, but Shayde, who he feared would attack Charas. He joined Sundra in attacking Shayde (who, needless to say, was totally surprised), and was not wrong in his assumption as Shayde attacked Charas in return. Charas, who had previously attacked Sundra, was getting crazed by bloodlust, and attacked Sawyer in a frenzy. Sawyer was hurt emotionally and physically by the deep blow but persevered, lunging at Shayde with another horrific deep stab. Shayde was killed by a knife to the eye dealt by the half-insane Charas, and Misfit Toys shrank back to two members again, who fled the scene together.

Day 5

On day 5, Sawyer and his ally headed south to the desolate frozen Tundra and were quickly locked in battle with Mace Emberstatt and Alexander Hood. Again, fortune favoured Sawyer, and both Bros aimed for Charas rather than him. Her damage mounted and she fell to a stab in the neck from Alexander - who both the Misfit Toys had chosen as their own target. Wanting to avoid being killed himself, but grieving the loss of Charas, Sawyer persuaded the Bros to take him on as a third ally, and they accepted. Whilst crossing the Tundra, the newly formed alliance WTFZ joined a fight between some other tributes, and Sawyer proved his worth to his new team mates by swiftly stabbing Berkley Ichabod in the stomach. Although Berk fled before any of Sawyer's alliance could do any more permanent damage, Sawyer felt satisfied with his contribution. That night, Sawyer and Mace discussed Sawyer's relationship with Charas, during which they both realized that the other had feelings for the girl from twelve, but while Mace had acted on those feelings, Sawyer never did.

Day 6

Sawyer and the two Bros ventured on to the Ice Sheet east of the Tundra, and he understood that his enemies of the day were Mace and Alexander themselves. He initiated combat against Alexander without any real thought - only a sense of obligation. Inevitably Mace retaliated against him, and the fight became a 2-on-1 volley of misses and shallow cuts. Sawyer managed to land several serious blows on Alexander, but Alexander in return severed his right arm at the elbow in an unexpected return attack. More misses and shallow cuts entailed, but Sawyer managed a final attack which sent Alexander to his death.

Finale and Death

The four remaining tributes gathered on the Iceberg Field for what they all knew would be a battle that only one tribute could survive. Sawyer instantly targeted Sundra, killing her after just three extraordinary blows. Mace and Sawyer both turned on Aesop, who was too caught up in his dead!Sundra!feels to attack. Sawyer reflected on the tension of the moment and his feelings on the whole games, and continued his attacks on Aesop. Nevertheless, his hits and misses weren't enough to allow him to reach the Final Two, and he was killed by Aesop, who severed the ring finger of his left hand and rendered Sawyer too weak to continue fighting. Sawyer died slowly, having set the boat he was lying in alight and being consumed by the flames himself. As the last light left him, he cried out his final words: "You'll be joining me soon. Death awaits you Aesop Bloom!"
